Gqeberha – A major intelligence-driven operation by the South African Police Service (SAPS) has led to the arrest of two suspects and the seizure of drugs worth more than R19 million in the Eastern Cape.
The operation, carried out in the early hours of April 1, was led by the SAPS Counter Narcotics unit in collaboration with Organised Crime and Crime Prevention units, targeting a suspected large-scale drug distribution network.
Police said the investigation began after receiving information about a foreign national allegedly coordinating drug distribution from Quigney, KuGompo.
During the operation, officers intercepted a white Toyota Corolla near King Phalo Airport, where occupants were found in possession of narcotics.
A follow-up search at a flat in Kennaway Court, Quigney, uncovered a significant quantity of drugs and cash after the main suspect consented to a search of the premises.
The total street value of the seized drugs is estimated at approximately R19,311,000. The haul included mandrax tablets valued at R1.24 million, cocaine worth R18 million, as well as smaller quantities of crack cocaine and crystal meth.
Police also confiscated R77,340 in cash believed to be proceeds of criminal activity.
Two suspects – a 47-year-old foreign national and a 36-year-old woman – were arrested and remain in custody.
Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata praised the operation, highlighting the role of intelligence-led policing.
“This successful operation is a testament to the effectiveness of our intelligence-driven approach and the seamless collaboration between our specialized units,” Ncata said.
“We are sending a clear message that the long arm of the law will reach those who seek to poison our communities with illicit drugs, regardless of the scale of their operation.”
The suspects are expected to appear in the KuGompo Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession and dealing in drugs. Police said investigations are ongoing.
