Cato Ridge – A woman in her mid-40s has died after paramedics battled for 90 minutes to resuscitate her at a service station along the KwaZulu-Natal coast on Wednesday morning.
According to KwaZulu Private Ambulance, the incident unfolded at around 07:00 when a specialised Scene Safety unit stopped at a Cato Ridge service station while en route to a scheduled meeting in Hillcrest.
“The crew had made a brief stop at a service station in Cato Ridge when the routine morning was shattered by a frantic civilian pleading for help,” the service said.
Paramedics were led to a parked vehicle where they found an unresponsive female passenger.
“The paramedic followed the distressed man to a parked vehicle where they discovered a female passenger, unresponsive and showing no signs of life,” the statement read.
CPR was immediately started in the parking lot, while additional Advanced Life Support teams were dispatched to assist.

“The patient was immediately removed from the vehicle, and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) was initiated in the parking lot as backup Advanced Life Support units were dispatched to the scene,” the service said.
The woman and her fiancé had been travelling from Johannesburg to Umhlanga to celebrate their engagement, which had taken place just two weeks earlier.
It was later revealed that she had been experiencing chest pain in the days leading up to the incident.
“The grieving fiancé said the woman, a mother of two, had been complaining of persistent chest pains for the past 2 weeks,” paramedics reported.
Despite prolonged efforts by emergency teams, she was declared dead at the scene.
“Despite the arrival of additional crews and a grueling one-hour and 30-minute battle to restore her heart rhythm, the patient’s condition did not improve,” the service said. “Every available medical intervention was exhausted; however, she was tragically declared deceased on the scene.”
Authorities have extended condolences to the family and urged the public to take chest pain seriously.
“Always listen to your body, chest pain is an emergency,” the service warned.
