Cape Town – The South African Police Service (SAPS), in collaboration with the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and the City of Cape Town, has officially launched Operation Prosper, a joint security initiative aimed at strengthening crime prevention efforts in the Western Cape.
The launch was marked by a joint operational parade held at 35 Squadron in Belhar, signalling the readiness of integrated law enforcement and security forces ahead of the deployment of SANDF members to support SAPS operations across the province.
According to SAPS, the operation represents a coordinated response to violent crime, with a particular focus on firearm-related offences.
“Operation Prosper represents a coordinated and intelligence-driven response to crime, with a specific focus on combating violent and firearm-related offences that continue to threaten the safety and stability of communities in the Western Cape,” SAPS said in a statement.
The deployment will include enhanced police visibility, joint patrols, roadblocks, and targeted interventions in identified high-risk areas.
The event was attended by senior government and security officials, including Western Cape MEC for Police Oversight and Community Safety Anroux Marais, MP Derelene James, Deputy National Commissioner Lieutenant General Tebelo Mosikilli, Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Adv. Thembisile Patekile, SANDF Brigadier General Martin Gopane, and Acting City of Cape Town Commissioner Christopher Jones.
SAPS said the integrated approach is designed to improve coordination between agencies and strengthen the state’s response to escalating crime in affected communities.
