Limpopo – Police in Sekgosese, Limpopo, have launched an investigation into the death of a four-year-old girl whose body was discovered in bushes near Thabeng Dam in Lemondokop village, under the Mopani District.
The child’s body was found on Saturday, 28 March 2026, at about 16:00 during a search operation after she and a 63-year-old woman, Violet Maswanganyi, were reported missing.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), Maswanganyi, who is described as a mental patient from Itieleng village, was found alive.
However, the child was discovered dead and in a decomposed state.
Police said members of the community, working together with officers, had launched a search following reports that the pair had gone missing.
“The members of the community and police launched a search operation after the pair was reported missing,” SAPS said.
The child’s body was eventually recovered in the Lemondokop area near the dam.
An inquest docket has been opened as authorities seek to determine the cause of death.
Police said investigations are ongoing.
