Cape Town – South African Police Service (SAPS) officers have arrested two suspects in separate operations in the Western Cape, seizing drugs worth over half a million rand and confiscating an illegal firearm.
In the first incident, Public Order Policing members acted on intelligence about drugs being transported from KwaZulu-Natal to Cape Town via a passenger bus on Thursday, March 26.
According to SAPS, officers, who were off duty at the time, “placed themselves on duty and waited for the bus to arrive in Somerset West.”
Upon searching the luggage of a suspected passenger, police discovered a large quantity of drugs.
“The identified suspect’s luggage were searched and 6500 synthetic Cathinone tablets with an estimated street value of R520 000 were found in the luggage bags,” SAPS said.
A 35-year-old woman was arrested and charged with dealing in drugs. She is expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
In an unrelated incident on Saturday morning, March 28, police arrested a 25-year-old man in Manenberg for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Officers were conducting crime prevention patrols in Duinefontein Road when they spotted the suspect.
“The members were conducting crime prevention duties… when they saw the suspect with a firearm in his hand. They chased after the suspect and apprehended him,” SAPS said.
Police said the suspect attempted to dispose of the weapon during the chase.
“They confiscated a 9mm pistol with ammunition which the suspect threw on the roof of one of the houses.”
The man is expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court once formally charged.
Police investigations in both cases are ongoing.
