Mpumalanga – Several truck drivers were allegedly assaulted after a protest turned violent along the R532 at Hlabekisa near Bourke’s Luck (Potholes), Mpumalanga, where demonstrators blocked the road and attacked vehicles, police said.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) said officers, together with Public Order Police (POP), were monitoring a volatile situation following the early morning incident on 27 March 2026.
According to police, the disruption began shortly after 05:00.
“On 27 March 2026, at approximately 05:00, SAPS received a complaint from a community member regarding the incident,” police said.
Upon arrival, officers found that the road had been barricaded by a large group.
“Members found that the road had been barricaded by a group of more than 50 individuals. Five trucks were used to block the roadway, and debris, including burning tyres and corrugated roof sheeting, had been placed across the road,” SAPS said.
Truck drivers appear to have been specifically targeted during the unrest.
“According to the first truck driver, the group allegedly attacked his vehicle by throwing stones, breaking the windows, and forcing him to stop,” police said.
“The suspects then used his truck to block the road and drained the diesel.”
Police added that multiple trucks were subsequently seized and drivers victimised.
“Four additional trucks were subsequently stopped, their keys confiscated, and diesel siphoned. Some of the drivers were reportedly assaulted,” SAPS said.
Motorists were also affected, with reports of extortion at the scene.
“Motorists attempting to pass through the area were allegedly stopped and forced to pay money in order to proceed,” police said.
Authorities warned that while some vehicles are managing to pass, the situation remains dangerous.
“At present, some motorists are able to pass along the side of the road; however, they are urged to exercise extreme caution when driving through the area,” SAPS said.
Public Order Police from Hazyview have been deployed to stabilise the situation, while traffic flow in the area remains disrupted.
“Law enforcement, including Public Order Police, are on-site managing the situation and working to stabilise the area,” police said.
A case of public violence has been opened, and investigations are ongoing.
