Pretoria – The National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa (NPA) announced on Tuesday that 12 senior police officers and a company director have been arrested in connection with alleged corruption linked to the Medicare 24 contract.
The arrests were carried out by the NPA’s Investigating Directorate for Anti-Corruption (IDAC). The accused face charges including corruption, fraud, and contraventions of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA).
“All accused are expected to appear for the first time before the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court,” the NPA said in a statement.
The arrests relate to the irregular awarding of a tender to Medicare 24, which has been under scrutiny for months. Authorities have not yet released details about the individuals involved or the monetary value of the contract.
“This operation demonstrates our commitment to rooting out corruption in the public service, regardless of rank or position,” the NPA added.
The NPA has urged the public to allow the judicial process to take its course and said further updates would be provided as the case progresses.
