Durban – KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s contract has been renewed for another five years, with final details still being finalised, according to Police Minister Fannie Masemola.
His contract was set to expire at the end of March.
“We are in the process of finalising those details. So yes, he will still be Provincial Commissioner of KZN,” IOL quoted Masemola as saying.
“We have got a good working relationship, and the premier agreed to the renewal of the contract. So, we are just working on modalities,” he added.
The extension follows strong backing from the provincial government, with Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli repeatedly calling for the renewal and urging that the process be expedited to avoid uncertainty among the public and stakeholders, The Citizen reported.
Ntuli has consistently endorsed Mkhwanazi for a second term, describing him as “pivotal” in tackling KwaZulu-Natal’s high crime rates, including political killings and extortion.
“I have consistently maintained that there is no basis not to recommend a police officer of the calibre of Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi to continue with the important work he is doing,” the report quoted Ntuli as saying.
He emphasised that stable and continuous leadership is critical to maintaining progress in crime-fighting efforts and supporting the province’s broader stability and development.
The Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster also confirmed the renewal, ensuring Mkhwanazi will remain at the helm of policing in the province.

“KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Sibusiso Mkhwanazi, will have his contract renewed for a further five-year term in his capacity as Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal,” a statement read.
Known for his firm stance on crime and corruption, Mkhwanazi has earned both praise and controversy.
In July 2025, he sparked national attention with explosive allegations of political interference within the SAPS, implicating senior figures and claiming interference in police operations and the handling of sensitive cases.
These claims led to parliamentary inquiries, an ad hoc committee investigation, and a judicial probe through the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, all aimed at addressing corruption and restoring public confidence in the criminal justice system.
