Johannesburg – A worrying trend called “chuffing” has emerged in Gauteng, where young people are inhaling fire extinguisher contents.
A viral video shows school learners breathing in the powder and exhaling smoke-like fumes, alarming emergency officials.
City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services warned that inhaling fire extinguisher chemicals, including dry powder or carbon dioxide, can cause severe health issues such as pneumonia, seizures, or even death.
“Smoking/deliberately inhaling the contents of a Fire Extinguisher is extremely dangerous, can lead to serious health issues,including respiratory distress,seizures and potentially death,” EMS said in a statement.
