Durban – A 22-year-old suspect who had been arrested for attempted murder was shot and killed after allegedly attacking police officers and attempting to seize a firearm at the holding cells of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Ntuzuma, KwaZulu-Natal.
According to SAPS, the incident occurred on Monday morning at the Ntuzuma police station while officers were processing the suspect in the holding cells.
Police said the suspect, who had been arrested on Saturday, 14 March 2026, overpowered two officers who were charging him at the cells.
“A suspect who was arrested for attempted murder on Saturday, 14 March 2026, was shot and fatally wounded when he attempted to kill police officers at the police’s holding cells at Ntuzuma police station on Monday morning, 16 March 2026,” SAPS said in a statement.
Authorities said the suspect allegedly grabbed keys from the officers and began assaulting them.
“Two police officers were charging the suspect at the cells when he overpowered them and started assaulting them, after taking keys of the main door from the officers.”
Police said the situation escalated when backup officers responded to the scene.

“Police managed to call for backup and when uniformed police officers came to their rescue, the suspect grabbed the firearm from one of them and started shooting as he locked them inside the cells.”
Officers reportedly took cover as the suspect continued firing shots inside the holding area, creating what police described as a hostage situation.
“The hostage situation continued for several minutes before tactical police teams managed to penetrate the cells and during the operation, the 22-year-old suspect was shot and fatally wounded.”
Two officers – a male and a female – sustained minor injuries during the confrontation.
SAPS said the officers who were briefly held hostage would receive psychological support.
“Police officers who were held hostage will be temporarily withdrawn from active operations for them to undergo psychological debriefing sessions.”
Authorities have not released further details about the suspect as investigations into the incident continue.
