Cape Town – South African media personality and rapper Boity Thulo has spoken candidly about the pressure young black women face while navigating the country’s entertainment industry.
Boity reflected on the expectations placed on women in the spotlight and how these pressures can shape their personal and professional lives.
The television presenter and musician explained that the industry often demands perfection while leaving little room for mistakes or personal growth.
Speaking during a recent interview, Boity said many young black women are expected to constantly prove themselves while also dealing with intense scrutiny from the public and industry stakeholders.
“There’s a lot of pressure on young black women in this industry,” Thulo said, adding that expectations often go beyond professional performance and extend into personal identity and public image.
The star emphasised that women in entertainment frequently face criticism regardless of their achievements. She said the constant judgment can create a difficult environment for young women trying to build sustainable careers.

Boity noted that success in entertainment often comes with unrealistic standards that can affect mental well-being. She explained that women are expected to balance authenticity with public expectations while also maintaining a flawless image.
“There are so many expectations placed on us,” she said. “You’re constantly navigating what people want from you and who you truly are.”
Despite these challenges, Thulo encouraged young women pursuing careers in the creative industry to remain confident and focused on their purpose. She said it is important for women to support one another and create spaces where authenticity and growth are valued.
Boity believes open conversations about the realities of the entertainment industry are necessary to empower the next generation of performers and media personalities.
The star, who has built a successful career as a television presenter, entrepreneur and musician, said sharing these experiences can help young women better prepare for the realities of fame while also reminding them that they are not alone in facing these challenges.
