Eastern Cape – Five people were killed and 60 Zimbabwean nationals injured after a VW Polo collided head-on with a bus on the N6 between KuGompo (East London) and Stutterheim in the Eastern Cape on Sunday night.
The car, carrying five occupants, became trapped underneath the bus and emergency services used the jaws of life to retrieve the bodies.
“Jaws of life were used to extricate the deceased from the VW Polo. It is alleged that the Bus and VW Polo were travelling in opposite directions at the time of the accident. The injured passengers were rushed to the nearest hospital for further medical evaluation,” The Citizen quoted Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson Makhaya Khomisa as saying.

The injured passengers were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Authorities have opened cases of culpable homicide and reckless driving as investigations into the cause of the crash continue, while Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha extended condolences to the victims’ families and urged motorists to obey road rules, SABC News reported.
“The main cause of the crash will be subjected to further investigation by various law enforcement agencies. The case of culpable homicide and reckless driving has been opened at Stutterheim police station. Transport and Community Safety MEC Xolile Nqatha has conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wishes the injured passengers a speedy recovery. The MEC has urged motorists to obey the rules of the road,” Komisa said, according to the report.
