Durban – Two bread delivery workers escaped unharmed after being confronted by armed suspects during an attempted robbery and hijacking in Canelands, north of Durban, on Friday.
According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the incident occurred while the employees were delivering bread in a white Hyundai H100 bakkie that was loaded with crates.
The owner of the vehicle reportedly arrived at RUSA’s headquarters requesting urgent assistance after learning about the incident involving his staff.
“Two employees delivering bread were confronted by armed suspects during a robbery/hijacking attempt in Canelands,” the organisation said in a statement.
RUSA said the delivery team was approached by two male suspects who produced firearms.
According to the organisation, the driver fled on foot and hid nearby before contacting the vehicle’s owner.
“The driver fled on foot and concealed himself. He then contacted the owner of the vehicle and informed him that the suspects were attempting to rob them and possibly take the vehicle,” RUSA said.
The owner was able to monitor the vehicle’s movement using a cellphone tracking application and provided responding officers with the vehicle’s GPS location.
Reaction officers were dispatched and quickly converged on the area, where the delivery vehicle was found parked outside a tuck shop.
“Officers immediately mobilised and converged on the area. The bakkie was located parked outside a tuck shop,” the organisation said.
When first responders arrived, they were approached by the driver and his assistant, who said they had fled in different directions after the suspects produced firearms.
RUSA said the suspects were unable to start the vehicle and fled the scene without stealing anything.
No injuries were reported during the incident.
