Johannesburg – Johannesburg mayor Dada Morero survived a motion of no confidence in the Johannesburg council on Thursday after the motion collapsed due to procedural issues rather than a vote count.
The motion, tabled by Al Jama-ah and allied minority parties, failed because the proposer, Lubabalo Cecil Magwentshu of the African Transformation Movement, was absent, and there was no seconder when council speaker Margaret Arnolds called for the motion.
The motion had been delayed for weeks over legal discussions regarding demands for a secret ballot.
The collapse came shortly after Loyiso Masuku was elected as Johannesburg’s first deputy mayor, reinforcing the governing position of the African National Congress in city leadership.
Morero, who lost his ANC regional chair position in Johannesburg last year, remains politically vulnerable but continues serving as mayor.
