Johannesburg – Johannesburg has appointed ANC regional chairperson and Finance MMC Loyiso Masuku as its first-ever deputy mayor.
She was elected unopposed during council proceedings on Thursday, creating a new second-in-command office intended to strengthen executive and economic governance in the metro.
The position replaces her previous role in the mayoral committee for finance, consolidating fiscal and executive responsibilities.

The move comes amid political pressure on Mayor Dada Morero, who faces a pending motion of no confidence.
Morero previously survived a similar challenge after the African National Congress pushed for a secret ballot, though council rules remain unclear on whether such ballots are legally permitted in removal votes.
Proceedings were still ongoing at the time of reporting in South Africa.
