Cape Town – Proceedings at Parliament’s ad hoc committee descended into chaos when forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan abruptly walked out during his testimony into alleged corruption and political interference in South Africa’s justice system.
O’Sullivan, who had returned to complete his evidence, faced accusations that he might be a spy or foreign agent.
As his scheduled testimony neared its end, he said he needed to catch a flight to Johannesburg and announced he was leaving “on my own free will.”
“I have reached a point chairman, where I have to go,” O’Sullivan said.
Paul O’Sullivan just walked out of parliament! He’s showing them who’s the boss. I wouldn’t be surprised if Paul is running this country #AdHocCommittee pic.twitter.com/hE9jJ3jLt2

EFF leader Julius Malema objected, insisting O’Sullivan could not leave without being formally released by the chairperson. MK Party MP David Skosana compared the incident to former NDPP Shamila Batohi’s 2025 walkout from the Nkabinde inquiry, arguing that such conduct should not be allowed.
Committee chair Soviet Lekganyane sought legal guidance on how to handle the situation, while ANC MP Xola Nqola emphasised the seriousness of the walkout.
