Durban – Two suspects believed to be part of a gang that robbed a cash-in-transit (CIT) vehicle in Verulam were shot and killed during a shootout with police in KwaZulu-Natal in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the suspects were traced to the Nhlazatshe area in Shayamoya, Edendale, where they allegedly engaged police in a gun battle.
In a statement posted on its official X account, SAPS said: “2 Suspects, who were suspected of being part of the suspects who robbed a #CIT vehicle in Verulam on Monday, 23/02, were shot and fatally wounded in a shootout with police at Nhlazatshe area in Shayamoya, Edendale in the early hours of Tuesday morning, 24/02.”

Police said officers recovered three firearms at the scene. “Police found three firearms, two rifles and a handgun, together with several rounds of ammo in the possession of the suspects,” the statement read.
A Volkswagen Polo allegedly used in the commission of the robbery was also found at the scene. In addition, officers discovered “a bakkie with numerous number plates… in the garage,” SAPS said.
“No police officer was injured during the shootout and the search for the other suspects is ongoing,” police added.
The investigation into the Verulam CIT robbery and the broader criminal network involved continues.
