Johannesburg – Sentencing arguments for Amber-Lee Hughes, the 26-year-old former pre-school teacher convicted of raping and murdering her four-year-old stepdaughter, Nada-Jane Challita, have been adjourned in the Johannesburg High Court.
Hughes was expected to take the stand, but her defence said they had not had sufficient time to consult with her.

She faces a prescribed minimum sentence of life imprisonment for both charges.
Judge Richard Mkhabela agreed to postpone the proceedings until Wednesday to allow Hughes to prepare her mitigation, noting the need to balance the accused’s right to consult her legal team with the interests of justice.
