Barberton – The South African Police Service (SAPS) is investigating cases of murder and attempted murder following the discovery of a man’s body with a gunshot wound near Agnes Mine on 13 February.
According to a statement posted on the SAPS X account, police received a report from a local hospital concerning two injured men who claimed they were “assaulted and shot near the mine.”
“Preliminary investigations indicate the group had gone to the mountain to mine gold illegally when a confrontation allegedly ensued with Basotho nationals,” the post read.
“One person was fatally shot, while others sustained gunshot wounds.”

The body was later recovered at Agnes Mine and transported to Forensic Pathology Services for examination. SAPS confirmed that cases of murder and attempted murder have been opened and that investigations are ongoing.
Police are appealing to the public for assistance. “Anyone with information that may assist the investigation or help locate the deceased’s family is urged to contact Detective Lieutenant Colonel Vusi Maphanga at 082 303 9704 or #CrimeStop on 08600 10111. Information may also be submitted anonymously via the #MySAPSApp,” the statement added.
Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant information to come forward as the investigation continues.
