Johannesburg – A Melville woman shocked motorists on Wednesday by dragging a bottle of water and shampoo into the middle of the road and taking a public “shower” in protest over Johannesburg’s ongoing water crisis.
Her bold act became the defining image of a day-long demonstration after residents endured 23 days without municipal water.
Protesters blocked one lane in each direction, waving placards reading, “No more empty tap promises. Bring back water to Joburg,” as many passing drivers hooted in support.

The protest highlighted widespread frustration across Johannesburg, where water shortages have disrupted daily life.
While Rand Water has restored full supply capacity, municipal systems in the City of Johannesburg remain under strain due to low reservoir levels, ageing infrastructure, heatwave-driven demand and water losses of around 33%.
Deputy President Paul Mashatile has convened a Water Task Team, with measures including water tankers, technical support and system recovery plans.
An Intergovernmental Water War Room has also been set up to coordinate repairs and stabilise supply, as officials insist water is still being distributed but the system remains under severe pressure.
