Johannesburg – The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has threatened to withdraw from its coalition partnerships with the ANC in Gauteng metros, accusing the ANC of exploiting the party.
The EFF currently supports ANC-led governments in Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Ekurhuleni.
At a party plenum in Boksburg, EFF leader Julius Malema said the party would no longer back ANC mayoral appointments unless the ANC supported an EFF candidate.
“The days where the EFF supports other organisations to have mayors have come to an end. We will field mayors and anyone who wants to negotiate with the EFF must know that the EFF wants mayorship,” said Malema.

Malema said that the EFF would no longer accept being treated as a “backbencher” and is prepared to field its own mayors, warning the ANC that continued disrespect could have consequences.
The ANC relies on the EFF’s support to maintain control in these metros.
