Johannesburg – President Cyril Ramaphosa unveiled the original FIFA World Cup Trophy on Friday at the Union Buildings, marking the symbolic start of the FIFA World Cup 2026 South Africa Trophy Tour.
Joined by FIFA legend Marcel Desailly, Ramaphosa showcased the iconic trophy at the Nelson Mandela Amphitheatre, emphasising its significance as a beacon of “hope, pride, memory, and momentum” for South African football.
The event signals South Africa’s prominent role in the 2026 tournament, co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico, with the nation set to host several matches.

“This moment places the future of South African football into the hands of its people,” the Presidency stated in posts on X, highlighting national anticipation ahead of the global spectacle.
The trophy tour aims to rally public support and build excitement as South Africa prepares for its return to the world stage.
