Durban – An off-duty South African Police Service (SAPS) officer was shot and killed in Cottonlands, KwaZulu-Natal, on Saturday night, with the motive for the killing still unknown.
According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the incident occurred shortly before 10pm. “At approximately 21:47, Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received a call for assistance after a resident reported hearing a gunshot,” the organisation said in a post.
RUSA officers who responded to the scene found a man lying in the roadway.
“Reaction Officers arrived on scene and found a 38-year-old male lying in the centre of the road with a single gunshot wound to the back of his head. He was declared deceased at the scene,” the post read.

The deceased was later identified by a family member.
“The victim’s brother-in-law confirmed that the deceased was an off-duty SAPS Official stationed at Ndwedwe Police Station in Ndwedwe – KZN,” RUSA said.
The officer, who resided in Ndwedwe, was reportedly in Cottonlands at the time of the shooting. RUSA stated that the officer “was allegedly visiting family in Cottonlands – KZN at the time.”
A red Toyota Tazz belonging to the victim was found at the scene. “All personal belongings were still in his possession, and no items were reported missing,” according to RUSA.
Police have not yet established a motive for the killing. “The motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage,” the organisation said. Investigations are ongoing.
