Cape Town – A 45-year-old man has been arrested for murder following a domestic violence incident in which a 37-year-old woman was allegedly beaten to death at Mashonamini Trust in Calcutta, Mpumalanga.
According to police, officers received a complaint at around 08:00 on Thursday, 8 January 2026, reporting that a woman had been assaulted with a wooden stick by her husband. Police responded to the scene and were led to a room where the victim was found lying on the floor with no signs of life.
Emergency Medical Services were called and certified the woman dead on arrival.
Police said the suspect handed himself over at approximately 08:45 and was immediately arrested and charged with murder. He is expected to appear before the Mkhuhlu Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 9 January 2026.

Mpumalanga Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, expressed concern over the continued rise in domestic violence cases.
“Gender-based violence remains a serious challenge in the country and will not be tolerated,” Mkhwanazi said.
He extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and urged members of the public to seek assistance when experiencing conflict or abuse in their relationships, stressing the importance of early intervention to prevent further loss of life.
