Tongaat – KwaZulu-Natal: Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) officers captured a large night adder after residents reported the presence of two snakes outside a property in Buffelsdale, Tongaat, on Tuesday.
According to RUSA, the Tongaat Operations Centre received a call for assistance from residents of Tulip Place earlier in the day after the reptiles were spotted near a home.
“Upon arrival, Reaction Officers located one snake inside a discarded car tyre outside the property,” RUSA said. “Residents confirmed that a second snake had retreated into nearby bush before officers arrived on scene.”

The captured snake was identified as a night adder measuring approximately one metre in length.
RUSA warned that while the species is not typically aggressive, it can pose a danger if provoked. “This species possesses cytotoxic venom and can deliver a painful bite, however it is generally not considered aggressive unless threatened,” the organisation said.
Residents were advised to remain cautious and to contact emergency services or trained handlers should further sightings occur in the area.
