Cape Town – ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula sparked backlash after sharing his 2025 holiday playlist on social media, expecting lighthearted engagement but instead drawing sharp criticism from South Africans frustrated with the country’s challenges.
While many acknowledged his good taste and support for local artists, including Tyla, DJ Maphorisa, Black Coffee and others, commenters questioned the appropriateness of the post amid high unemployment, crime and service delivery failures.
Critics urged Mbalula to focus on governance, accountability and tangible achievements rather than “vibes”, with some remarks going viral for their bluntness.
This year was a great year in the music scene and our artists produced really great music. There are so many songs I enjoyed this year and am sure many of you did. Below is my top 10 songs I enjoyed amongst many others. Enjoy! pic.twitter.com/1fccRZc4We

Although a few defended his versatility and personality, the overwhelming response reflected public anger and disillusionment, turning the playlist into a symbol of the growing disconnect between political leaders and citizens’ pressing concerns.

Great taste in music Mbaks, Now how about your top 10 achievements for the youth, the unemployed, and improving livelihoods of South Africans? With youth unemployment over 60%, we are tired of playlists sifuna ama jobs, opportunities, and real change. What’s the ANC’s list for…

Maybe if you focused on the bread and butter issues of ordinary South Africans such as Jobs, Healthcare and Home ownership instead of listening to music your Party wouldn’t be suffering in the polls…
