Rustenburg — Police have launched an investigation following a cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery and murder on the R510 road between Rustenburg and Northam, near Dikweipi Village outside Mogwase, on Friday afternoon.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the incident occurred at about 17:15 on 19 December 2025. Security personnel were travelling in a cash-in-transit van from Northam to Rustenburg when they encountered a burning vehicle in the middle of the road.
“It is alleged that security personnel were inside a cash-in-transit van, which was travelling from Northam to Rustenburg, when they saw a burning vehicle in the middle of the road,” police said.
Believing there was a community protest, the guards attempted to take a detour through Dikweipi Village. However, as they were about to divert from the main road, they came under attack.
“They decided to take a detour through Dikweipi Village, thinking there was a community protest. They were about to take the detour, when a group of heavily armed men fired shots and injured the driver,” SAPS said.

Police allege that the suspects then disarmed one of the security officers of his 9mm pistol and ammunition before detonating explosives on the cash-in-transit van.
The suspects, who were travelling in a Toyota GD6 and a Toyota Fortuner, allegedly began loading cash into the vehicles after the explosion. During this time, an unidentified man reportedly approached the scene.
“The suspects, who were using a Toyota GD6 and a Toyota Fortuner, were loading cash into the vehicles when an unknown male attempted to join the robbers to pick up money, but was allegedly shot dead by one of the robbers,” police said.
No arrests have been made at this stage and investigations are ongoing.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the North West, Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo, urged members of the public to stay away from crime scenes.
“He called upon the public to refrain from picking up money and tampering with and contaminating crime scenes as this is life-threatening and jeopardises investigations,” SAPS said.
Police have appealed to anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward.
