Durban – Preliminary figures indicate a decrease in road fatalities in KwaZulu-Natal compared to 2024, the province’s Department of Transport announced on Saturday.
The announcement came as KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Duma Nkosi, led a multi-disciplinary operation at the Mariannhill Toll Plaza along the N3, part of the ongoing #NenzaniLaEzweni Operation.
“This morning we interacted with motorists along the N3 at the Mariannhill Toll Plaza. Based on our preliminary figures, we have noted a decrease in the number of fatalities compared to 2024,” Nkosi said.
The MEC praised the efforts of the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) and other agencies involved.
“We commend our energized team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate for their visibility throughout the corners of the province,” he said, adding, “We thank the National Minister Barbara Creecy for augmenting the #NenzaniLaEzweni Operation with a deployment of National Traffic Police.”
The operation, which began on 1 December, has seen coordinated efforts from the RTI, National Traffic Police, municipal traffic officers, and the South African Police Service (SAPS). According to the department, the following results have been recorded so far:
-
73 055 cars stopped in KwaZulu-Natal
-
10 953 motorists served with charges for offenses including speeding
-
Over 500 motorists arrested for drunk driving
-
659 unlicensed vehicles intercepted
-
704 motorists driving without licenses
-
773 vehicles suspended and removed from the road
Nkosi emphasised the importance of multi-agency cooperation. “We value the support from National Traffic Police, SAPS, and traffic officers from all municipalities,” he said.
The #NenzaniLaEzweni Operation is set to continue through the holiday season, targeting road safety and law enforcement on major routes across the province.
