Tongaat, KZN – An 83-year-old woman was brutally assaulted by her adult son in their Belvedere home in Tongaat earlier this week, police confirmed.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) officers were called to the residence at approximately 04:00 on Tuesday following reports of a domestic assault.
Upon arrival, officers discovered the elderly woman with severe injuries, including open wounds.
“The victim explained that her 40-year-old son sprayed insecticide into her eyes and struck her with her own crutches,” said a spokesperson for RUSA.
“She managed to flee the house and seek help.”
Officers from the South African Police Service (SAPS) and RUSA conducted an initial search for the suspect, but he was not immediately found.
The suspect was later located by SAPS Tongaat officers and arrested without incident.
SAPS Tongaat Sergeant N Singh and Captain Y Nadas confirmed that the man has been charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) under domestic violence provisions.
“Domestic violence is a serious concern, particularly when it affects the elderly,” said Captain Y Nadas.
“We urge communities to report any form of abuse immediately.”
The 83-year-old woman is receiving medical care and is reportedly in a stable condition.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the assault.
