Durban – A 13-year-old boy was killed on Tuesday night after falling from the back of a moving bakkie and being struck by another vehicle on Jabu Ngcobo Road near Trenance Park in Inanda, KwaZulu-Natal.
According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the incident involved a white Nissan NP200 travelling towards Inanda with six children seated at the back.
“While the bakkie was still in motion, the minor allegedly jumped off the vehicle,” RUSA said.
“A second vehicle travelling behind the bakkie at a high speed struck the child and ran over him.”
RUSA said its officers were dispatched to the scene at about 22:02 following reports of a collision.
“Upon arrival, officers found the body of the minor on the roadway,” the organisation said.
“The child had sustained severe injuries and was declared deceased on scene. The body was found dismembered as a result of the impact.”
It was further alleged that the driver of the Nissan NP200 was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident and fled before first responders arrived.
“The driver of the NP200 bakkie abandoned his girlfriend and the remaining five children at the scene,” RUSA said.
The driver of the vehicle that struck the child also failed to stop and sped off.
A woman at the scene told reaction officers that the children were neighbours and had been returning from an outing to the beach.
Police investigations into the incident were under way.
