Cape Town – In the early hours of Monday, two officers from the South African Police Service (SAPS) died in what appears to have been a murder‑suicide at the Ritavi Police Station in Nkowankowa, outside Tzaneen, Limpopo.
According to police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, a 40‑year‑old sergeant from the Mopani District office visited the home of a 31‑year‑old constable based at Ritavi station late on Sunday night.
The pair reportedly had an argument, prompting the constable to call colleagues for help, after which officers escorted her to the station for her safety.
Mashaba said the sergeant initially left the area but later returned — diverting from Giyani — to Ritavi station.
Upon arrival, “he found the Constable at the Community Service Centre (CSC) and fatally shot her before turning the gun on himself.
Both members were declared dead at the scene,” he confirmed.

The matter has been classified as a murder‑suicide.
Authorities have opened a murder case and inquest, and referred the investigation to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).
Provincial police commissioner Thembi Hadebe addressed the tragedy with shock and sadness — especially given its timing during the nationwide 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children.
“This incident is a stark reminder of the destructive impact of domestic violence, even within our own ranks,” she said, according to The Citizen.
Hadebe added, “We urgently appeal to all members experiencing relationship difficulties, emotional distress, or domestic conflict to seek professional help without delay.” She urged SAPS personnel to make use of the organisation’s Employee Health and Wellness support programmes rather than resorting to violence.
She also offered condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the two deceased officers.
Investigations are ongoing, and further details will be released as the inquiry progresses.
