Johannesburg – Loyiso Masuku has been elected as the new ANC regional chairperson of Greater Johannesburg, becoming the first woman to lead the region.
She won a hotly contested race against former chairperson Dada Morero, receiving 184 votes to Morero’s 149.
Masuku’s election is seen as a fresh start for the ANC’s regional leadership and positions her as a potential mayoral candidate in next year’s local government elections.

Background on Loyiso Masuku:
According to The Citizen, Masuku began her activism in student politics and has served in multiple ANC structures, including the ANCYL and the ANC Women’s League.
She is the wife of former Health MEC Bandile Masuku, who was involved in a controversial Covid-19 PPE scandal.
Born in the Eastern Cape, she has been influential in Johannesburg politics, holding various government roles including in the City of Ekurhuleni, Gauteng government, and currently as Finance MMC for the City of Johannesburg.
If elected mayor, she would be the first female ANC mayor of Johannesburg.
