Cape Town – A seven-year-old Kleinmond boy was rushed to hospital on Tuesday after a non-fatal drowning incident at the town’s lagoon, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has confirmed.
NSRI Kleinmond station commander Schalk Boonzaaier said their duty crew was activated shortly after 17:20.
“At 17h20, Tuesday, 2 December, NSRI Kleinmond duty crew were activated following reports of a non-fatal drowning in the vicinity of Main Beach, Kleinmond,” he said.
The alert was first raised by Overstrand Fire and Rescue Services, who were already responding to the scene. “Initial reports had been received from Overstrand Fire and Rescue Services who were responding to the scene,” Boonzaaier said.
NSRI crew, along with Overstrand Law Enforcement, ER24 ambulance services and Western Cape Health EMS, responded to the call-out.
“On arrival on the scene, it was found that a local 7-year-old male was out the water after suffering a non-fatal drowning in the Kleinmond Lagoon,” Boonzaaier said.
He confirmed that the child received immediate care from emergency responders.
“The child was medically treated on the scene, and he was transported to hospital by EMS ambulance in a stable condition for further medical care.”
Authorities have not released further details, but the boy is expected to recover.
