Cape Town – Hugo Broos has named his final Bafana Bafana squad for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), signalling a shift toward youth ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
The biggest omission is veteran playmaker Themba Zwane, whose recent injuries and age worked against him.
His spot goes to the in-form Sipho Mbule, who Broos sees as the younger creative midfielder needed to refresh the team.

According to IOL, Broos has long planned to phase Zwane out, and Mbule’s resurgence made the transition easier.
Another surprise exclusion is Fawaaz Basadien, dropped due to a lack of game time at Mamelodi Sundowns, despite previously captaining the national side in a friendly.
Broos’ final squad blends experienced performers with energetic young talent, aiming for a more dynamic, high-tempo playing style in Morocco. The coach hopes the renewed midfield creativity and youthful depth will give Bafana Bafana an edge at the tournament.
The confirmed list includes:
-
Goalkeepers: Ronwen Williams, Sipho Chaine, Ricardo Goss
-
Defenders: Mudau, Sibisi, Mbokazu, Modiba, Matuludi, Ndamane, Ngezana, Kabini, Tylon Smith
-
Midfielders: Mokoena, Mbatha, Aubaas, Sithole
-
Strikers/Attackers: Nkota, Mokwana, Mbule, Mofokeng, Appolis, Moremi, Magkopa, Lyle Foster, Shandre Campbell
