Cape Town – Five people have died following a devastating multi-vehicle collision on the N10 between Cookhouse and Gqeberha on Sunday, 30 November.
According to The South African, the crash involved two trucks and a bakkie, with emergency responders confirming multiple fatalities at the scene.
As reported by PE Express, Eastern Cape Department of Transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose confirmed the latest casualty update: “A total of five people have died — two males and three females — in that accident.”
He added that two others sustained injuries and were rushed to Andries Vosloo Hospital for urgent medical care.
Binqose further explained the difficulties authorities faced in gathering accurate information.
“The remoteness of the area and poor mobile-phone network coverage are contributing to delays in the flow of information from the crash site.”
This made real-time coordination challenging for emergency crews.

The collision prompted the temporary closure of the N10, with traffic diverted while rescue workers cleared debris and stabilised the scene.
The tragedy comes just as Transport Minister Barbara Creecy launched the country’s annual festive-season road-safety campaign. According to The Citizen, authorities are urging motorists to exercise heightened caution as traffic volumes begin to rise ahead of the holidays.
The Eastern Cape remains one of the provinces most affected by high-fatality crashes during peak travel periods. As stated by the Department of Transport in previous communications, the province continues to battle “a pattern of avoidable road deaths” linked to speeding, fatigue and unsafe overtaking.
