Cape Town – December fuel prices in South Africa are expected to rise due to higher international oil prices, though a slightly stronger rand may reduce the increase by about three cents.
Brent crude averaged $64.14 per barrel in November, with diesel seeing faster price pressure because colder northern hemisphere weather boosts heating oil demand.
According to the most recent figures from the Central Energy Fund, petrol prices are expected to rise modestly by roughly 19 to 42 cents per litre, whereas diesel could see a sharper increase of 72 to 89 cents per litre.
These increases follow November price cuts of 51 cents for petrol and 21 cents for diesel.
Despite the hike, December’s petrol price for 95 Unleaded (R20.54) remains 26 cents cheaper than in January 2025, while 50ppm diesel will be about 55 cents more expensive.
Estimates are as follows:
Petrol 93 – increase of 19 cents per litre
Petrol 95 – increase of 24 cents per litre
Diesel 0.05% (wholesale) – increase of 72 cents per litre
Diesel 0.005% (wholesale) – increase of 89 cents per litre
Final adjustments will be announced by the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources early next week.
