Johannesburg — The Democratic Alliance (DA) will investigate allegations that party leader John Steenhuisen misused the party’s credit card for personal expenses, including Uber Eats, party officials confirmed, according to reports.
This follows a complaint from the DA’s finance committee chair, Dion George, who accused Steenhuisen of using the party’s credit card for personal expenses, The Citizen reported.
DA federal chairperson Helen Zille said the Federal Executive (FedEx) has referred the matter to the party’s Federal Legal Commission for a full investigation, with a media injunction imposed on all parties involved.
“The Democratic Alliance’s Federal Executive met last night to discuss a formal response to the continuing public airing of matters relating to a dispute between senior office bearers of the party. In the course of the conflict, numerous allegations have been made,” a statement read.

“The Democratic Alliance remains committed to serving all South Africans in an ethical, accountable and responsive manner.”
The investigation follows heightened tensions between Steenhuisen and George, who was recently removed as Minister of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment amid allegations of sexual misconduct and verbal abuse toward staff.
The internal conflict comes months before the DA’s 2026 elective conference, where leadership positions — including Steenhuisen’s — remain uncertain.
