Durban – Heavy rains over the weekend in KwaZulu-Natal’s uMshwathi Local Municipality have destroyed homes and roads, leaving communities isolated.
KZN MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, will visit the area with Mayor Mandla Zondi on Monday.
Emergency assessment teams from Human Settlements are evaluating the damage, and short-term housing solutions are being planned for displaced families.
“Following our assessment, I will engage with the Minister of Human Settlements, Thembi Simelane, as part of efforts to strengthen and augment our intervention,” Duma said.
“Our focus is on short-term housing solutions for the displaced families.

“Many communities will be isolated as roads and bridges have been flooded and some washed away.
“Our dedicated team from Road Traffic Inspectorate is working flat out to ensure the safety of motorists.
“The RTI team is coordinating certain road closures and observing major routes.”

The provincial Road Traffic Inspectorate has implemented road closures and traffic management, particularly for trucks on the N3 and N2, to prevent congestion.
The public is urged to follow weather updates and exercise caution while travel plans are being monitored and coordinated.
