Cape Town – The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has condemned the G20 Leaders’ Declaration adopted in Johannesburg, arguing that it masks neocolonial economic domination under the veneer of multilateral solidarity.
In a statement, the party said that the document represents “a continuation of global power imbalances, neocolonial economic domination and the systematic erosion of African sovereignty,” as stated by national spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela.
MK accuses the G20 of appropriating African moral philosophy through its use of Ubuntu, calling it “philosophical theft.”
“G20’s appropriation of Ubuntu is philosophical theft. To invoke Ubuntu while sustaining structures that undermine African agency is intellectual dishonesty of the highest order.”
The party warns that the declaration paves the way for what it describes as a “new frontier of resource colonialism, disguised as cooperation.”
“This is the new frontier of resource colonialism, disguised as cooperation. It is a blueprint for the continued global domination of the South, wrapped in diplomatic language.”

On financial matters, MK is particularly critical of the role of institutions such as the IMF and World Bank. The party states bluntly:
“The G20 cannot coexist with a global financial architecture that enforces debt dependency and dictates national policies to African nations.
“These are not solutions. They are chains.”
MK also takes issue with the G20’s energy and climate agenda, especially how “critical minerals” are discussed.
“The declaration openly acknowledges that critical minerals are central to the global technological economy … These frameworks seek to control Africa’s development in the name of sustainability, while G20 nations themselves continue to expand fossil fuel production.”
Beyond these criticisms, MK describes the entire G20 Summit as mere “political theatre.”
“The uMkhonto weSizwe party clearly articulate our position of firm opposition to the G20 Summit and the political theatre surrounding it … The G20 Summit serves merely as a global showcase for photo opportunities, speeches and statements that do not translate into real change for South Africans.”
In its long-term vision, MK calls for an African development model that rejects Western-dominated institutions, one built on “economic liberation from external control, domestic mineral beneficiation, independent fiscal and monetary policy … and protection of land, agriculture and food systems from global market capture.”
