Cape Town – African National Congress (ANC) Secretary General Fikile Mbalula has denied reports that ANC NEC members are calling for President Cyril Ramaphosa to resign, calling such claims “rumours” spread by party members using the media.
Speaking to the media in Johannesburg on Tuesday, Mbalula said Ramaphosa’s resignation was not formally raised or discussed during the national executive committee (NEC) meeting.
The party held an ordinary NEC meeting over the weekend.
“The president will not go because he was elected by members of the ANC, not by rumor mongers and by those who are peddling negativity to undermine the cohesion of the ANC,” he said.
“There’s no way where the president is going. The president is doing very well. He’s leading a collective of which that collective will account to the general council.
“The president stepping down? That never arose. Nobody talked about such a thing in the NEC.”
Ramaphosa has also challenged his critics to stop discussing his exit in secrecy.
Following the NEC meeting, Mbalula highlighted the party’s focus on restoring public trust, with the Integrity Commission central to ensuring ethical leadership.
The ANC will conduct extensive vetting and lifestyle audits for mayoral and councilor candidates ahead of local government elections, with metro mayoral candidates to be announced early in 2026.
Additionally, the NEC has tasked the Integrity Commission with monitoring both the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry and the Parliamentary Ad Hoc Committee investigating political interference in the police, demonstrating the ANC’s commitment to cleansing and renewing itself.
