Cape Town – The Gauteng Provincial Legislature is set to hold a vote of no confidence in Panyaza Lesufi, the Premier of Gauteng, this Friday — the first such challenge to his leadership since the minority government was formed last year.
The motion follows a critical finding by the Public Protector that Lesufi had established an unlawful “crime-prevention wardens” unit known as Amapanyaza. Lesufi had committed publicly to “repurposing” the wardens and training some as provincial traffic wardens.
The motion was tabled by the Democratic Alliance (DA), which accuses Lesufi of creating the illegal structure and of allowing an environment of corruption in provincial departments.
According to the DA leader in Gauteng, Solly Msimanga, “We were ridiculed when we said this was an illegal act. You cannot just make an announcement about the announcement of people that is going to cost billions.”
📢 Tomorrow, the DA takes a firm stand for Gauteng.
We will brief the media ahead of the crucial Motion of No Confidence against Premier Panyaza Lesufi — a Premier who has failed on jobs, safety, and service delivery.Gauteng deserves better. The people deserve real change.

ActionSA chairperson of Gauteng SCOPA said, “The separation of powers and delegation of authority between the different spheres of government are constitutional mandates which Premier Lesufi failed to adhere to. Political gimmicks from all sides of the political spectrum can never cloud our judgment.”
“We will hold Panyaza Lesufi accountable as both the Premier and Executive Head of Community Safety in Gauteng by tabling motions to the House”
ActionSA Takes Accountability Very Seriously
Whilst we acknowledge the role played by the Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens, their unlawful and unconstitutional establishment, appointment and deployment can never be allowed.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has, however, disputed the no confidence motion against Lesufi, stating that the DA, is the one that gave Lesufi the position in the first place.
