Cape Town – In a brazen attack at the busy Nyanga transport hub on Wednesday morning, several gunmen opened fire on a minibus taxi, killing two women and wounding at least ten people.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the shooting occurred at around 10:17 am and involved high-calibre rifles.
“At least 43 cartridges were recovered at the scene,” police confirmed.
The victims were reportedly members of the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) and were travelling to a meeting near Cape Town International Airport when the ambush took place.

Nyanga Community Policing Forum (CPF) spokesperson Dumisani Qwebe said the community was “very shocked and devastated because we were worried about the people who are using the public transport.”
He added, “This incident has shaken the whole community. The victims were women, and that is bad news”, according to EWN.
Deputy provincial commissioner Major-General Luyanda Damoyi noted that police suspect an intra-industry conflict within CATA as the motive, though the investigation remains ongoing. He said two murder cases and eight attempted murder charges have been opened.
The taxi rank in Nyanga has been the scene of multiple violent incidents this year, including shootings in January, April and September, according to CPF records.
