Johannesburg — Emergency services are on high alert as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecasts more severe thunderstorms and heavy rain across Gauteng on Friday.
“Alert: the SA Weather Service (Saws) has issued a warning for severe thunderstorms in Gauteng on Friday!!! Heavy rain, localised flooding, small hail, damaging winds and excessive lightning are possible in places.”
The warning comes after Thursday’s downpours caused localised flooding and multiple road accidents in areas including Alberton, Bedfordview, Crown Mines, Primrose, Krugersdorp, Buccleuch, and Sunninghill.

Joburg EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi urged motorists to drive cautiously, maintain safe following distances, and avoid flooded roads and low-lying bridges. Residents, particularly in informal settlements, are advised not to cross river streams as flash floods are likely.
Severe weather conditions are also expected in other provinces, with thunderstorms forecast for the North West, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape, and Free State.
Meanwhile, parts of the Western Cape — especially Matzikama and Bergrivier — are under a heatwave alert until Sunday, with temperatures remaining extremely high. SAWS has additionally issued a yellow-level 1 warning for damaging coastal winds between Cape Columbine and Cape Agulhas.
