Johannesburg – Police are calling on controversial North West businessman Oupa “Brown” Mogotsi to formally open a case of attempted murder following an alleged attack on Monday night.
According to South African Police Services (SAPS) spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, Mogotsi has so far refused to provide a statement, citing fears for his safety.
“He refused to open up a case last night, citing fears for his life. So, we are still waiting for him. He promised to make himself available at around 8 o’clock, and he is a no-show at the Vosloorus Police Station. We have registered a case of attempted murder.

“We’re still waiting for his statement. We hope this incident was not staged; otherwise, he could face charges for defeating the ends of justice,” Mathe said, according to The Citizen.
A case of attempted murder has been registered, and authorities are urging Mogotsi or anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
Regarding questions about whether the assassination attempt was staged, a couple outside their Vosloorus home told The Sowetan that they saw a red Chevrolet speeding before abruptly leaving the road and screeching to a stop in an open area.
“He [the driver of the car] parked his car on the deserted space next to housing facing the N3 highway. The same man alighted from the car with a gun and fired shots. My partner and I ran in different directions to seek refuge,” the report quoted the woman as saying.
“I even left my shoes behind; I was scared. What if he had pointed the gun towards us?”

On Tuesday morning, the woman said she learned the car belonged to Mogotsi and that he had reportedly been attacked by unknown assailants.
Although initially hesitant to approach the police, she eventually came forward with the information on Tuesday afternoon, the report said.
Mathe warned that if the attack was staged, Mogotsi could face charges for defeating the ends of justice.
Mogotsi allegedly came under fire while driving a red Chevrolet in Vosloorus, with police recovering eleven bullet casings at the scene.
Residents reported the vehicle was riddled with bullet holes, though Mogotsi survived the incident unharmed.
Ballistic experts have begun a forensic examination of the car.
