Johannesburg – Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi says the province is fully prepared to ensure the safety of all delegates and international guests attending the upcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit, which will feature global leaders including China’s President Xi Jinping.
Speaking at a media briefing in Johannesburg on Tuesday, Lesufi said a multi-agency security plan involving SAPS, national and provincial traffic police, and metro police departments has been adopted to provide full protection and escort services.
“Gauteng is well equipped to ensure a safe and secure environment for all participants and our residents, the Saps, in full coordination with all other law enforcement agencies, has robust plans in place that we have all adopted. These are the plans that will make sure that Gauteng is safe,” Lesufi said.
“Our multi-level law enforcement strategy will see delegates being escorted by a unified force comprising of Saps, national traffic police, Gauteng provincial traffic, and all metropolitan police departments will be deployed to escort and support our visitors.”

He confirmed heightened security at all ports of entry, especially airports, to ensure smooth arrivals and departures of heads of state. Lesufi also announced that new CCTV technology is being rolled out across the province as part of a long-term crime prevention initiative.
Addressing the arrest of an explosives expert who trespassed at the Nasrec expo centre, Lesufi said the arrest demonstrated the effectiveness of security measures.
He warned against any illegal activities during the summit, saying law enforcement would respond decisively.
While acknowledging that Gauteng is “never 100% ready” due to its complex security environment, Lesufi expressed confidence that the province is well prepared and that police will be tough on criminals during the event.
