Siya Kolisi gets emotional: ‘Eben’s not just a teammate, he’s my brother’

Cape Town – Springbok captain Siya Kolisi has once again shown his soft side with a heartfelt birthday message to his longtime friend and teammate, Eben Etzebeth.

The post, filled with warmth and sincerity, melted the hearts of fans across the country.

In his post, Kolisi reflected on watching Etzebeth grow from a young player into one of South Africa’s most respected rugby figures. But more than his sporting achievements, Kolisi emphasised the person Eben has become: kind, humble, and someone who inspires everyone around him.

Alongside his words, Kolisi shared a series of personal photos, capturing memories from their journey together — from intense training sessions and big matches to lighthearted moments off the field. It was a glimpse into the friendship that has quietly shaped both of their lives.

He also included a verse from the Bible, one that spoke to the strength of lasting friendship, “One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”

What makes their friendship so special is the way Kolisi leads with heart. He’s not only the Springboks’ captain but also someone who uplifts his teammates, marks their achievements, and supports their growth.

When Etzebeth reached the milestone of becoming the most-capped Springbok, Kolisi acknowledged their long-standing bond, saying that they’ve been side by side since they were 18, and that their friendship had grown into a brotherhood.
