Johannesburg – The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Gauteng has joined ActionSA and the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party in rejecting the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) call to support its motion of no confidence against Premier Panyaza Lesufi.
The DA’s motion follows a public protector Kholeka Gcaleka’s report that found Lesufi’s Gauteng crime prevention wardens, known as AmaPanyaza, were established irregularly and had no legal authority to perform policing duties.
“The law neither empowers nor confers upon provincial government any authority to exercise policing powers.
“Any conduct that seeks to assume any power or function not granted by law or to perform functions or powers falling exclusively in another sphere of government shall be unlawful and unconstitutional,” said Gcaleka.

In a letter to the DA, the EFF said it would not back the motion, accusing the party of hypocrisy for labelling the EFF a “public enemy” while now seeking its support.
“The EFF believes that political engagement must be grounded in mutual respect and good faith. For as long as your public pronouncements about the EFF remain in effect, the EFF has no business engaging with your organisation in whatever way, shape or form,” the party said in a statement.
“If the DA genuinely wishes to demonstrate good faith, it must publicly retract these inflammatory statements and issue a clear apology.”

The MK Party also dismissed the motion as opportunistic, arguing Lesufi should not be punished for efforts to fight crime, while ActionSA said the DA’s bid is unlikely to succeed without backing from the EFF and MK.
