Limpopo – A 53-year-old police sergeant from Riba Cross, attached to the Presidential Protection Service (PSS) in Pretoria, took his own life after being cornered by police along the R555 near Burgersfort on Sunday, 12 October 2025.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the officer, whose name has not yet been released, was wanted in connection with a murder and an attempted murder in Gauteng.
“It is alleged that on Saturday, 11 October, the suspect fatally shot a female sergeant, also a member of the SAPS, in Pretoria,” said Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Thabo Makhubele.
“The following morning, he reportedly shot and wounded his wife in Bronkhorstspruit.”

Limpopo police acted after receiving intelligence about the officer’s movements.
“Officers intercepted a white Nissan vehicle he was driving. The suspect allegedly fired a shot towards our members and, when cornered, turned the firearm on himself,” Makhubele said.
“The firearm used has been confirmed as a state-issued service pistol.”
An inquest case has been opened, and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has been notified to conduct a full investigation.
“This is a tragic incident that underscores the importance of vigilance and coordination between provinces in managing high-risk individuals,” Colonel Makhubele added.
