Cape Town – The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has condemned the Johannesburg High Court’s decision to grant R400,000 bail to alleged crime kingpin Katiso “KT” Molefe, calling it a serious error of judgment.
Molefe, accused of masterminding the 2022 murders of DJ Sumbody and his two bodyguards, faces charges including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and possession of illegal firearms.
Police allege that weapons seized from his operations are linked to 18 other criminal cases, including assassinations and attempted murders.
EFF spokesperson Sinawo Thambo said the court ignored strong evidence presented to the Madlanga Judicial Commission, where senior police officials identified Molefe and fellow businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala as leaders of the “Big Five” crime cartel involved in killings, drug trafficking, hijackings, tender fraud, and extortion.
Tambo warned that Molefe’s release poses a serious threat to the safety of witnesses.

“This undermines every principle of justice and endangers the lives of witnesses, whistleblowers, and police officers working on these cases,” he said.
Tambo warned that Molefe’s release poses a threat to witnesses and investigators, urging the state to immediately provide protection to all witnesses and whistleblowers linked to the case.
“The EFF demands that all witnesses and whistleblowers connected to Molefe’s cases be placed under immediate state protection. Their lives are at grave risk while a man accused of leading one of South Africa’s most dangerous syndicates walks free.
“History has shown that witnesses in politically or criminally sensitive cases are often silenced through intimidation, disappearance, or murder when protection is not guaranteed.”
Molefe, who was arrested in July 2025 by the SAPS Political Killings Task Team, has also been linked to politician Kenny Kunene, who was reportedly found at Molefe’s Sandton home and is alleged to have visited several times.
