Pretoria – Controversial former police minister Bheki Cele has publicly questioned the official account of South Africa’s ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa’s, death, citing conflicting reports from French authorities and delays in allowing SA detectives to travel to Paris.
Cele said he personally does not believe Mthethwa took his own life, emphasising that his views are separate from the ANC’s stance.
“Why are our top detectives prevented from travelling to France? This also raises suspicion.

“First it was said his cellphone was found at a park, later it changed. I don’t believe Mthethwa took his own life. This is my personal view, not the ANC’s. I am sure the ANC will still express its own view on the matter,” Times Live quoted Cele said.
Investigators are tracking the money, suggesting possible laundering linked to senior SAPS officials and organised crime.
“This is not just about phone calls. It’s about money. It’s criminal,” said Mkhwanazi on Wednesday.
“The communication dates back to 2024. We are tracking where the money went after the deposit—whether it returned to Cele or reached someone else.”
At Mthethwa’s memorial in Pinetown, hundreds of mourners, including ANC members, celebrated his life and contributions to the party and the country.
The funeral has been designated a category 2 special official funeral by President Cyril Ramaphosa, with national flags at half-mast.
Tributes highlighted Mthethwa’s loyalty, humility, and service, while younger speakers used the platform to critique the ANC’s coalition politics in KwaZulu-Natal and urge grassroots rebuilding ahead of local elections.
